Last week, Terra Solar Philippines awarded the project's engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to China Energy Engineering Group (Energy China). Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos Jr visited what is thought to be the world's largest project to combine solar PV and battery storage.
Strategically located in the Philippines, the comprehensive development is designed to harness substantial renewable energy resources, boasting a total planned capacity of 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) power and 4.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage.
GEA-4 will add 9,378 MW of new capacity from ground-mounted solar, roof-mounted solar, floating solar, and onshore wind projects. Pairing solar plants with battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be the main strategic focus. The Philippines is targeting an additional 1,100 MW of solar capacity equipped with energy storage under GEA-4.
A significant amount of the Philippines' primary energy supply is still fossil fuel-based, making the country vulnerable to rising energy costs and market volatility while the energy production is at the same time CO2 intensive.
The BESS supply agreement marks Huawei's largest to date. Construction started on the Meralco Terra Solar solar-plus-storage project in November 2024. The site is claimed to be the world's largest integrated power plant that combines the two technologies.
This project marks a significant milestone as Terra is poised to become the largest integrated photovoltaic and energy storage power station in Southeast Asia.
