China New Growth: Infrastructure goes vertical and digital
China has a vast network of about 4.2 million 5G base stations, and over 300 Chinese cities have begun deploying 5G-A, aiming to create the world''s largest low-altitude
China had over 2.1 million 5G base stations by the end of August, accounting for 19.8 percent of its mobile base stations, up 5.5 percentage points from the end of 2021, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Some 677,000 5G base stations were built in the first eight months of this year, according to the ministry.
Given that China currently has the largest 5G network in the world (∼1.53 million base stations by the end of 2021, Table S1) and that base station number was projected by up to 6–8 million by 2030 (CCID Consulting, 2020), concerns are being expressed regarding 5G mobile networks' environmental effects and sustainability.
Under the model predicted 5G base stations, China's 5G network could yield 0.15–0.29 GtCO2 /yr emissions subject to the nation's BDDL from 40 to 80 % by 2030. Both 5G base stations and CO 2 emissions are significantly lower than the previous estimates.
Under the scenario of business-estimated six million base stations in 2030, the share of electricity consumed by China's 5G networks in 2030 could reach 8.4 % of the national total power generation, causing 0.44 GtCO2 /yr CO 2 emissions.
Our modelled 5G base stations by 2030 range from about 1.3 to 5.0 million subjects to the two scenarios.
For China, based on a single base station power's energy consumption of 11.5 KWh (Huawei, 2019), we estimate that the electricity consumed by its 5G network by 2030 will be 6.04 × 10 5 GW for 6 million base stations, the equivalents of 8.4 % of China's national total power generation in 2019, respectively.
