Energy Storage in The Netherlands
Distribution System Operators (DSO''s): Several regional grid managers, who also act as DSOs. They work together with energy suppliers, often private parties, who buy or
Energy storage can play a key role in contributing to solutions for shortages of capacity on the grid. It is therefore no surprise that we have seen the appetite for large-scale battery energy storage systems growing in the Netherlands.
While battery energy storage system projects (BESS) in the Netherlands is still a relatively new and small industry, it becomes increasingly necessary. Growth in battery capacity began in 2021 when the total installed capacity rose by 65% compared to the previous year. This number doubled in 2022 and then tripled in 2023, reaching 621 MWh.
Focus on three key technologies that are already developing strongly in the east of the Netherlands: electrical energy engineering, electrochemical energy storage and sustainable drive systems. Smart energy Hub: Smart decentralised energy system that produces, stores and uses sustainable energy locally.
No specific laws & regulations: In the Netherlands, energy storage is not described in Dutch laws and regulations as a specific item. Standard requirements: It has to meet standard requirements for production and consumption and some specific technologies that are part of the energy storage system must comply with standardisation.
This highlights one of the main barriers to energy storage in the Netherlands, as batteries currently pay more transmission costs than polluting wholesale consumers. The ACM recognises this issue but holds that, as a general rule, transmission tariffs should be paid by the parties charging the network.
S4 Energy's CCO, Dominique Becker Hoff, stated that the Dutch grid is under strain, citing growing demand and a mismatch between renewable energy availability and demand. “It is no secret that the Dutch electricity grid is under strain. The demand for electricity is growing faster than infrastructure can be expanded,” said Becker Hoff.
