The facility will produce 6.09 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually, sufficient to meet the energy needs of Papua New Guinea or Luxembourg for one year. The solar farm surpasses the previous record holders for the largest operational solar facilities, also located in western China.
The project will combine 5.2 GW of solar with 19 GWh of battery storage to produce 1 GW of continuous baseload renewable energy. The project was announced today by Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, United Arab Emirates Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, at the opening of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit 2025.
One word: “Wow.” Aerial photographs show the 5GW farm's array of glinting solar panels extending over a vast, flat tract of land, human figures dwarfed like ants among them. To give you an idea of just how big this site is, it occupies roughly the same area as New York City.
World's Biggest Solar Farm Goes Live in China and It Can Power an Entire Country for a Year The 5GW complex – which occupies roughly the same area as New York City – puts the country at the forefront of the green energy revolution Aerial view of solar panels at Gansu Dunhuang Solar Park in Dunhuang, Jiuquan City, Gansu Province of China.
“At the end of the forecast period, almost half of China's electricity generation will come from renewable energy sources.” Much of the energy produced by the new solar farm is destined for China's cities, especially those on its eastern seaboard – which, unlike the Xinjiang region, are densely populated.
The solar farm surpasses the previous record holders for the largest operational solar facilities, also located in western China. Among past record holders have been the Longyuan Power Group's Ningxia Tenggeli desert solar project and China Lüfa Qinghai New Energy's Golmud Wutumeiren solar complex, both with a capacity of 3GW.
