As sodium-ion battery technology advances, it is emerging as a cost-effective alternative to lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for China's rapid expansion of large-scale centralized energy storage facilities.
As standardization frameworks develop, lithium-sodium hybrid systems could see broader deployment across China's renewable-rich regions such as Tibet, Xinjiang, and Gansu. Grid-forming storage is projected to account for up to 40% of China's new energy storage market by 2030.
China does dominate the supply chain today, both in terms of battery manufacturing and lithium refining, but HiNa's announcement pointed out that it only has about 6% of the world's lithium reserves for mining, whereas it has abundant reserves of the minerals for sodium-ion batteries.
Constructed by China Southern Power Grid's Guangxi branch, this station is only the first phase of a larger 100-MWh project. When fully operational, this initiative is expected to annually supply 73 million kWh of clean power, adequate to meet the needs of 35,000 households, while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions by 50,000 tons.
