Understanding Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power
Published by Alex Roderick, EE Power – Technical Articles: Understanding Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Generation, August 05, 2021.
However like other power generation sources, solar energy has also some Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) concerns. This paper presents the overview of solar energy technologies and addresses the SHE impact of solar energy technologies to the sustainability of human activities.
The increasing presence of utility-scale solar pho-tovoltaic (PV) systems (sometimes referred to as solar farms) is a rather new development in North Carolina's landscape. Due to the new and un-known nature of this technology, it is natural for communities near such developments to be con-cerned about health and safety impacts.
One of the more common concerns towards solar is that the panels (referred to as “modules” in the solar industry) consist of toxic materials that en-danger public health. However, as shown in this section, solar energy systems may contain small amounts of toxic materials, but these materials do not endanger public health.
It is true that photovoltaic solar panels do not pollute the air during power generation however manufacturing process of them involves many toxic materials, which is highly harmful from SHE perspective. There are some concerns after the completion of expected life of panel and in their recycling process.
Discover what solar panels are composed of, their safety and how they're treated at the end of their use. What is the lifespan of a solar panel? Large-scale photovoltaic (PV) solar panels generally have a design life of 25 to 30 years and will naturally degrade or lose their efficiency over time.
Unfortu-nately, the quick emergence of utility-scale solar has cultivated fertile grounds for myths and half-truths about the health impacts of this technology, which can lead to unnecessary fear and conflict. Photovoltaic (PV) technologies and solar inverters are not known to pose any significant health dan-gers to their neighbors.
