The Huadian Xizang Caipeng solar power plant, located at an altitude of 5,100 meters above sea level, has reached a new operational phase, establishing itself as the highest solar photovoltaic project on the planet.
The second phase of the Huadian Xizang Caipeng photovoltaic power plant officially began operation on December 14, 2024. This stage has significantly increased the energy production capacity, with the facility now covering an area of 134 hectares and boasting an installed capacity of 100,000 kilowatts.
The project, at an altitude of 5,228 meters, is the world's highest-elevation solar installation, surpassing the first phase, which was built at 5,100 meters. Previously, the highest utility-scale solar-plus-storage project in the world was another installation at 4,700 meters in Tibet. It was completed in 2020.
Today, covering an area of 609 square kilometers, this solar power base boasts a power generation capacity of 8,430 megawatts, making it the largest in the world, according to Qeyang, deputy director of the administration committee of the Hainan prefectural green energy industry park.
