1. Introduction Battery energy storage systems (BESS) have seen a rapid growth in the last few years. In 2019, the accumulated power of all BESS in Germany exceeded 450 MW . 95% of the BESS were used to provide frequency containment reserve (FCR), which accounts for more than 70% of the German FCR market in 2019.
The term energy storage relates to the various types of storage solutions which can store different types of energy. The following systems can be distinguished: thermal storages.
