The rise of renewable energy in Africa has coincided with a decade of growth globally, with solar energy alone experiencing a 30% growth a year.

Electrification improves quality of life and is crucial for achieving almost all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from advancing health and economic development to accessing more secure water supplies, but more than half of the population in East Africa lacked access to electricity in 2020 and many rely on biomass for energy [2, 3].
If Africa is to sustain its growth in renewable energy and create benefits for its population, implementing storage solutions becomes an imperative. Robust investment in storage will help to integrate different forms of energy into the grid seamlessly, thus promoting stable and uninterrupted power supply.
Solar PV, which, as reported by our colleagues at PV Tech in their write-up of the AFSIA report, reached 19.2GW in 2024, increasing by 2.5GW on 2023 levels, is becoming the focal energy generation resource for Africa.
