In another milestone, the Fourteenth Hydropower Bureau won the bid for the civil engineering and equipment installation at the Huanglong Pumped Storage Power Station in Gansu. This massive 2,100MW facility is the largest pumped storage project in the province and a vital addition to China's clean energy strategy.
It is expected that the pumped storage hydropower station will directly invest approximately 1.7 trillion yuan in the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, with a clear economic stimulus effect (China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, 2022).
To promote the construction of pumped storage power stations, it is of great significance for the construction and optimization of modern power systems. 2. Development trends of pumped storage energy in China To effectively support the construction and development of pumped storage power stations, China has issued a series of supporting policies.

In 2023, 239 pumped storage power station projects underwent updates, with a total capacity exceeding 316.735 GW and total investment exceeding trillions of yuan. The scale of pumped storage construction in each province is shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 6.
The country approved 110 pumped storage power stations with a total installed capacity of 148.901 gigawatts, which is 2.8 times the capacity approved during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. China has completed 70.90 % of the total capacity target of 210 gigawatts for key implementation projects during the “14th Five-Year Plan”.
