Here''s how photovoltaic (PV) technology will take center stage: PV as a Catalyst for Energy Access Rapid Deployment: PV remains the fastest-growing renewable energy source
Fabby Tumiwa, the Executive Director of Institute for Essentials Services Reform and the Chairman of The Indonesia Solar Energy Association said that ASEAN must establish strong cooperation in developing solar PV manufacturing capability.
The current key markets for solar power are Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, which also account for more than 87% of ASEAN's population. The solar M&A scene is most active in Thailand and Vietnam – the countries with the highest installed capacities in the ASEAN region.
We have discussed the current and potential solar energy installations and outputs of each country in the ASEAN region. The deployment of hybrid PV systems, such as floating PV installations, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels was discussed. The article further explored the critical maintenance protocols and predictive measures.
Monika Merdekawati, research analyst for sustainable renewable energy development, ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) during the ASEAN Solar Summit 2023 explained that while solar energy adoption in ASEAN is on the rise, the pace of progress is insufficient to accelerate the energy transition.
Presently, ASEAN boasts 28 GW of large utility-scale solar and wind power, contributing 9 percent to the region's total electricity capacity. Solar photovoltaics (PV) play a pivotal role renewable energy revolution of Southeast Asia. Abundant sunlight, economic growth, and the rising demand for clean energy drive this shift.
Fabby added that Southeast Asia has the potential to become a solar PV manufacturing hub, supplying both domestic and global demand. Currently, seven Southeast Asia countries already have manufacturing capacity in various stages, with a total annual capacity of 70 GW of solar module production, with Vietnam supplying half of this capacity.
