A comprehensive review of stationary energy storage devices
Research is taking place on improving their stability and storage performance with extra focus being placed on the latent PCM TES as several applications are in development:
Energy harvesting and storage devices, including lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), supercapacitors (SCs), nanogenerators (NGs), biofuel cells (BFCs), photodetectors (PDs), and solar cells, play a vital role in human daily life due to the possibility of replacing conventional energy from fossil fuels.
From the electrical storage categories, capacitors, supercapacitors, and superconductive magnetic energy storage devices are identified as appropriate for high power applications. Besides, thermal energy storage is identified as suitable in seasonal and bulk energy application areas.
Besides, CAES is appropriate for larger scale of energy storage applications than FES. The CAES and PHES are suitable for centered energy storage due to their high energy storage capacity. The battery and hydrogen energy storage systems are perfect for distributed energy storage.
Battery, flywheel energy storage, super capacitor, and superconducting magnetic energy storage are technically feasible for use in distribution networks. With an energy density of 620 kWh/m3, Li-ion batteries appear to be highly capable technologies for enhanced energy storage implementation in the built environment.
The applications of energy storage systems have been reviewed in the last section of this paper including general applications, energy utility applications, renewable energy utilization, buildings and communities, and transportation. Finally, recent developments in energy storage systems and some associated research avenues have been discussed.
Electrical Energy Storage (EES) technologies have been comprised in supercapacitors, ultracapacitors, electrochemical systems such as batteries and fuel cells, hydro systems and many more. Balcombe et al. (43) presented that EES can increase system efficiency, performance and reliability.
