Multi-level inverters, which allow to be applied more than two voltage levels at the output, are already found in a wide range of applications in various industrial sectors today. Since these inverter topologies are often used at high system voltages, they are frequently used in the field of power supply and grid applications.
The currently most widely used topology in vehicles is a two-level voltage inverter. Figure 1 (a) shows this topology for one phase. The two-level topology allows the output voltage relative to the neutral point N to switch between the two voltage levels, positive half and negative half DC link voltage (uAN = Udc ⁄2 and uAN =- Udc ⁄2).
The first advantage is a series connection of several switches that reduces voltage drop on each switch and allows the reduction of inverter switching losses. Moreover, this allows inverters' implementation in high-voltage and high-power systems. A second advantage is a high number of levels that reduce the output voltage and current THD.
There are a lot of challenges to delivering eficient power conversion in high-voltage applications. However, component, topology and system-level innovations can significantly increase the high-voltage power-conversion system's eficiency and density, while simplifying designs.
A distributed DC grid system could greatly simplify high-voltage power conversion and increase system availability and reliability. Beyond system architecture innovations, control system innovations are another way to simplify and improve high voltage power-conversion systems.
The trend towards higher battery voltages to enable fast charging and high performance opens potential applications for multi-level inverters in traction drives. Especially in the heavy-duty sector, like in trucks or buses, initial developments for battery voltages >1000 V and drive powers >300 kW are being observed.
