Battery Discharge Testing: Implementing NERC
Initial conditions, site preparation, test duration, rate of discharge, temperature effect and other key factors associated with these discharge testing modes are discussed in
The safest and most effective solution is to connect resistors at both ends of the battery to consume the residual electric energy of the spent LIBs. However, due to different battery sizes, this method is not economically feasible. Based on this principle, two feasible methods have been derived for discharge pretreatment.
The discharge test is started with the high current rate and when T1 is reached, the voltage at the battery terminals is recorded. Reduce the current to the second rate and proceed with the discharge test. A type 2 modified performance test is used when the duty cycle is more complex.
After batteries discharge, their voltages will rebound, which is an interesting phenomenon in terms of discharge pretreatment of spent LIBs.
The discharge test was performed on a battery bank with 56 cells and 112 V (2 Volts/cell) installed in Jan 2003. Its published ratings are shown in Table 2. The average cell temperature measured was 20 0C. A performance test was conducted at a constant discharge current of 95.1 A for a 3 hour time duration using the time adjusted method.
However, little attention has been paid to the voltage rebound phenomenon during the discharge pretreatment of spent LIBs. However, this phenomenon shows that spent LIBs still have some residual power after discharge, which will cause safety risks during battery disassembly and crushing.
Only one pause is allowed for the duration of the test and the pause time should not be counted in the total discharge time2. Once the test is completed, determine the battery capacity. The test equipment can then be disconnected. While performing the discharge test, one should be prepared to bypass weak cells approaching polarity reversal.
