China drives world renewables capacity addition in 2023
China more than doubled solar capacity in 2023, and wind power capacity rose by 66 percent from a year earlier, the IEA said. The agency said that under current market
In 2016, China's installed offshore wind power capacity reached 590,000 kW, an increase of 64% year-on-year. All new offshore wind power projects are located in inshore coastal waters. As of the end of 2016, the cumulative installed offshore wind power capacity in China totaled 1.63 million kW (see Fig. 11.4).
From steppe to power source, China's wind energy sector is revolutionizing the country's electricity supply and taking on a global leadership role. With its vast landmasses in the north and an extensive coastline, China has optimal conditions for generating wind power.
Thus, a comprehensive assessment will help to understand the history, current situation and future challenges of China's wind power industry by combining some recent statistics. The remaining part is organized as follows. In Section 2, the development history of modern wind power in China will be introduced.
Specifically, the development scale of wind power expanded rapidly, investment funds increased significantly, and the manufacturing industry of wind power equipment developed rapidly. During the period 2005–2010, China's wind power installed capacity has maintained an average annual growth rate of more than 100%.
According to the National Energy Administration, in 2016, China's newly installed and grid-connected wind power capacity reached 19.3 million kW and cumulative grid-connected installed wind power capacity reached 148.64 million kW (see Fig. 11.1) . Source National Energy Administration
Especially after 2003, development speed has been significantly improved. According to statistical data by Chinese wind energy association (CWEA), the wind power capacity in 2003 is 546 MW, but in 2006 it has reached 2537 MW. From 2006 to 2010, China's wind power industry entered the period of industrialization development stage.
