More than 100 planning applications for battery energy storage systems were filed in the UK between April and June 2025, covering a combined 8.4GW of capacity. That is more than twice as much as in the same quarter last year.
To meet its 95 per cent clean power goal, the government estimates Britain will need about 23-27GW of battery storage by 2030, up from about 6GW now. The UK's total battery storage project pipeline currently contains a total of 127GW of capacity. Figure 1 demonstrates the amount of capacity at each development stage as a proportion of the total pipeline. 8% of the capacity pipeline in the UK is operational or under construction, with 31% approved and yet to begin construction.

Overall though, the breakdown of the battery storage pipeline in the UK indicates a position of growth, with a large proportion of the pipeline capacity in early development, in planning and consented stages.
