Energy is one of the most important foundation in growth of a city. Kabul's demand is 620 MW, but the government can only provide 363.5 MW, and its conventional electrical system is associated with problems like limited interaction, non- or one-way communication, limited power flow control, and cas-cading outages.
Afghanistan's power supply comes from various sources, including city power produced from water dams, fuel generators, imported electricity from neighboring countries, and increasingly, solar energy. Solar energy is preferred due to its cost and sustainability.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water, this was one of the first times that electricity from any central Asian republic country was brought to Kabul City. A separate project is in place for Barki Tojik in Tajikistan to export surplus electricity to Afghanistan and to improve the energy output from Tajikistan's hydropower plants.
Kabul has 363.6 MW (approximately 243.5 MW from Uzbekistan, 70 MW from hydro energy and 50 MW from thermal energy) to meet 620 MW in demand, a shortage of 256.5 MW. 638,607 customers are con-nected to a traditional grid and its limitations . “We are now able to provide 180 MW of power to Kabul at peak times, and 160 MW at other times,” Qayum said. The total still falls well short of the 300 MW that Kabul needs, but the new transmission line, jointly funded by India and the Asian Development Bank, will gradually increase output, Qayum said.
