The 25 MW/100 MWh EVx™ Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) is a 4-hour duration project being built outside of Shanghai in Rudong, Jiangsu Province, China. The EVx™ is under construction directly adjacent to a wind farm and national grid.
The EVx gravity storage system works by raising and lowering concrete blocks to store and release potential energy, and will store 100MWh of energy, which it can deliver at 25MW.
Gravity storage has been proposed by a number of players, as a way to store solar and wind energy that has been generated at times when demand is low. On a sunny day, for instance, a solar farm's output could be stored as potential energy by raising concrete blocks.
Slated to be fully grid-interconnected in Q4 2023, the gravity tower will mark the world's first non-pumped hydro gravity-based storage facility. The project is located near a wind power facility outside of Shanghai in Jiangsu Province, China. It is a 25 MW / 100 MWh storage system that makes use of the company's new “ribbon” based lifting systems.
