Smart grids are one of the major challenges of the energy sector for both the energy demand and energy supply in smart communities and cities. The article includes an analysis and a list of energy storage systems that are applied in smart grids. Various energy storage systems are examined raging from electrical, electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical systems. Two case studies are presented that show the role of energy storage in effective management of energy demand and supply.
The authors support defining energy storage as a distinct asset class within the electric grid system, supported with effective regulatory and financial policies for development and deployment within a storage-based smart grid system in which storage is placed in a central role.
Case studies have shown the potential of smart grid technology to enhance energy management while reducing system expenses. Most of the energy management developments have been centered on how to integrate different DERs into grid operations.
