Southeast Asia''s learning curve for energy
Emerging energy storage markets across Asia face a similar learning curve today as their maturing counterparts have done in the past.
South East Asian countries are blessed with abundant solar energy potential. Yet, the solar photovoltaic potential remains underutilized. There are certain roadblocks in the progress of solar PV deployment in ASEAN. This paper aims to investigate the solar PV policies in the ASEAN region over the past decade.
The South East Asia region is an emerging photovoltaic market at its early-stage growth. ASEAN countries are expected to have substantial growth in solar PV deployment. The PV market in the ASEAN region has not evolved into a solid, self-sustaining PV market. Hence there is a necessity for policies and support mechanisms in ASEAN countries. Fig. 1.
The total electricity consumption in East Asia is 7,300,000 GWh/yr. Assuming an average capacity factor of 18%, solar PV systems with a rated capacity of 4,630 GW are required to meet the entire electricity demand in East Asia. This translates to a combined panel area of 23,000 km² or 14 m² per person assuming a panel efficiency of 20%.
ASEAN countries are expected to have substantial growth in solar PV deployment. The PV market in the ASEAN region has not evolved into a solid, self-sustaining PV market. Hence there is a necessity for policies and support mechanisms in ASEAN countries. Fig. 1. Different types of support mechanisms for solar PV development. 3.1.
By 2024, PV demand reached 1–1.6 GW, with 2025 demand expected to rise to 1.4–2.4 GW, growing 40–50%. Vietnam is showing faster growth than most other Southeast Asian markets. Southeast Asia's PV market is growing steadily, despite weaker demand in some countries.
In light of these optimistic demand forecasts, InfoLink analyzes the current status and future trends of Southeast Asia's top four PV markets. Thailand's PV demand in 2024 was 1.5-3.5 GW and is projected to reach 2-3.7 GW in 2025. Thailand plans to initiate regular utility-scale renewable energy tenders from 2022 to 2030.
